The 2026 KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship officially began on Sunday, 4 October, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, marking another opportunity to support the development of young football talent across Ghana.
KGL Foundation Programmes Manager Nii Sarpei performed the ceremonial kick-off, joined by Ghana Football Association Executive Council member Samuel Aboabire and Committee member Michael Fiaduse. The occasion brought together some of the country’s brightest young football prospects for an opening day of competitive action.
Through its sponsorship of the championship, the KGL Foundation continues to invest in grassroots football, providing a platform for promising players to demonstrate their abilities and gain valuable experience. The competition forms part of the Ghana Football Association’s Talent Development Scheme, which focuses on identifying, developing and nurturing emerging talent across the country.
This year’s tournament features standout U17 Colts players selected from Ghana’s 10 Regional Football Associations, alongside two GFA Elite Academy teams representing BIG Boss and Prempeh College. Bringing these players together creates opportunities to compete, learn and develop their technical skills and tactical understanding.
The opening fixtures delivered an exciting start to the championship. Defending champions Ashanti Region faced a challenging beginning to their title defence, losing 4–1 to an energetic BIG Boss side in their Group A opener. Brong Ahafo secured a 2–0 victory over Upper West Region, while Volta Region overcame Upper East Region 5–3 on penalties following a 2–2 draw in regulation time.
Western Region recorded the biggest winning margin of the day with a commanding 4–0 victory over Eastern Region. Prempeh College also opened their campaign with a 2–0 win against Northern Region, while Greater Accra edged Central Region 1–0 to complete the opening day’s fixtures.
For the KGL Foundation, the championship reflects its commitment to sports development and youth empowerment. Beyond the results, the tournament offers young footballers an environment in which to build confidence, strengthen teamwork, and develop discipline through competitive sport. It also gives emerging players an opportunity to represent their regions and academies while testing themselves against talented peers from across Ghana.
As the competition progresses, the Foundation looks forward to celebrating the talent, determination, and sportsmanship of the participating teams. Its continued support for the championship reaffirms its commitment to helping young footballers develop their potential and contributing to the future of Ghanaian football.
