At KGL Foundation, we believe young people already possess the creativity and potential needed to shape Ghana’s future. Our role is to help them recognise that potential, build their confidence and take the first step towards bringing their ideas to life.
This belief was at the heart of a mentoring session delivered by our Chief Executive Officer, Elliot Dadey, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). Speaking to young people at the IYF Mentoring Session, he encouraged them to draw inspiration from their surroundings instead of always looking outside Ghana for ideas.
Using the popular “Ghana Must Go” bag as an example, Mr Dadey explained how familiar objects can be given new meaning when viewed from a different perspective. He noted that when Louis Vuitton introduced its luxury interpretation of the bag, the creativity was not in discovering something new but in recognising the value of what already existed.
“The object did not suddenly become creative when it arrived in Paris,” he said. “What changed was who was looking at it.”
He encouraged participants to look at Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi with the same curiosity they bring to cities such as London, New York and Dubai. From young girls in Nima learning to code to designers collaborating with weavers in Wa, he reminded them that creativity is already thriving across the country.
“Ghana does not have a shortage of creativity,” he said. “Sometimes what we need is simply a fresh pair of eyes.”
Beyond having ideas, Mr Dadey challenged participants to act on them. He encouraged them to start small, test their ideas, listen to feedback and improve as they go, rather than waiting for the perfect time or resources.
The session ended with a seven-day challenge: identify a problem, write down ten possible solutions, choose one, build its simplest version, share it with five people and improve it based on their feedback.
Through initiatives like this, we remain committed to helping young people build the confidence, skills and mindset needed to turn their ideas into practical solutions and lasting impact.
